Wakefield-Scurr now leads an 18-person team at the Research Group in Breast Health at the University of Portsmouth in the UK. Their <a href=\"https:\/\/pure.port.ac.uk\/ws\/portalfiles\/portal\/23048531\/Norris_et_al_2020_AAM.pdf\">research shows<\/a> that the most effective high-impact-sports bras have underwires, padded cups, adjustable underbands and shoulder straps, and hook-and-eye closures. These bras reduce breast movement by up to 74% when compared with wearing no bra. But movement might not be the only metric that matters.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A biological rarity<\/h3>\n<p>Few anatomical structures hang outside of the body unsupported by cartilage, muscle, or bone\u2014meaning there wasn\u2019t much historical research to build on. Wakefield-Scurr\u2019s lab was the first to find that when women run, the motion of the torso causes breasts to move in a <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.humankinetics.com\/view\/journals\/jab\/25\/4\/article-p322.xml\">three-dimensional pattern<\/a>\u2014swinging side to side and up and down\u2014as well as moving forward and backward. In an hour of slow jogging, boobs can bounce <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.physiology.org\/doi\/full\/10.1152\/physiol.00024.2019\">approximately 10,000 times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A sports necessity<\/h3>\n<p>Wearing a bra that\u2019s too tight can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/sports-and-active-living\/articles\/10.3389\/fspor.2022.902276\/full\">limit breathing<\/a>. Wearing one that\u2019s too loose can create <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0167945714000906?via%3Dihub\">back, shoulder, and neck pain<\/a>. Pain can also be caused by the lag between torso and breast movement, which causes what is scientifically known as \u201cbreast slap.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lab\u2019s research has also found that the physical discomfort of bad bras, combined with the embarrassment of flopping around, is the one of the biggest <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/24905581\/\">barriers to exercise<\/a> for women and that if women have a good sports bra, they\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/pure.port.ac.uk\/ws\/portalfiles\/portal\/4612741\/Understanding_key_performance_indicators.pdf\">more willing to go for a run<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">An open question<\/h3>\n<p>Some bras function by deliberately compressing breasts.
