Even a civilization traveling slowly between stars could spread across the whole galaxy in a few million years, which pales in comparison to how old the galaxy is. If there is intelligent life somewhere, we should have seen signs of its existence by now.<\/p>\n<p>That means either reaching for another star is too difficult or other intelligent species simply haven\u2019t bothered. But once the Fermi probe launches, we will become a civilization that can and wants to reach another star, meaning that neither explanation might be what\u2019s keeping the galaxy unexplored.
